At many conventional restaurants, customers have to raise their hand and call the waiter over and over again to order or even just to settle the bill. When the staff are too busy, the customers are likely to become dissatisfied with the wait time.

However, at a restaurant which has a smartphone application, the customers can make orders, and settle the bill easily without even calling any waiter. As a result, they can thoroughly enjoy their meal and experience.

As in the restaurant example, UX isn't just about designing websites and apps, it's about rebuilding the entire service to "Improve the quality of the user experience."

For apps and websites, if the UI (design and function) ignores UX, it is impossible for the user to have a comfortable experience, possibly resulting in them not wanting to use the app or website anymore and so leaving before getting the information that they need. Even if it's digital only, UX is still very important. By focusing on the higher purpose and goal of superior UX, the UI will naturally follow.
